Volunteer Opportunity for Recent Graduates:
Ryen Dwyer is the coordinator for a large volunteer teacher program at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
Red Cloud is a Lakota Catholic K-12 school district in the Jesuit tradition on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with nearly 600 students. Volunteers serve in one year increments and can serve up to three years. Volunteers work with and for the Oglala Lakota people, and most volunteers are eligible for AmeriCorps benefits after their term of service.
The school is seeking recent college graduates who have a passion for education and service. For the 2019-2020 school year, they are especially looking for qualified high school English teachers.
Ryen will be tabling at St. Kate’s, across from the Info Center, on Wednesday, February 13, 10AM-2PM, and will also be in the St. Paul area on Thursday the 14th. Please share this information with any recent graduates you think might be interested. Here is a link to more information on the volunteer program.
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver, Selected Poems
Teachers may be inspired asking this of our students. But we are certain as well to have a lengthy response if we ask it of ourselves. In each of our answers comes some sentiment or intentionality around service. At St. Kate’s this aligns with the overall mission of the institution. We hope to embody this in sharing our student’s work to synthesize educational research and theory here for themselves and for all who seek to grow in their profession. We can’t wait to hear how this work is helpful, or what else we might do to build an unpretentious go-to place for practicing teachers everywhere.
